The Korean delegation to attend

the 77th World Health Assembly (May 27 to June 1)

- Minister of Health and Welfare leads the delegation

as chief delegate for the first time in five years since 2019,

delivering keynote speech and engaging to bolster global health cooperation

including through bilateral meetings -

The Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW, Minister Cho KyooHong) announced that the Korean government delegation (Chief Delegate: Minister Cho KyooHong) will attend the 77th World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, hosted by the World Health Organization (WHO) for six days from May 27 (Monday) to June 1 (Saturday), 2024.

Held under the theme of “All for Health, Health for All,” the assembly will open with a keynote speech by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, followed by statements from chief delegates from each member country.

Attending the assembly in person from May 27 (Monday) to 28 (Tuesday), Minister Cho will deliver a keynote speech outlining the Korean government’s efforts to ensure healthy lives for all and invite other countries to join the efforts. The minister will also sit with the WHO Director-General and the representatives of member countries such as Japan, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, Australia, and China in bilateral meetings, where the minister plans to exchange opinions and reaffirm solid cooperation on various issues including the 14th General Programme of Work (GPW 14), which is WHO’s medium- and long-term strategic plan; the Pandemic Agreement; the WHO Investment Round, a resource mobilization approach; and health policy cooperation (including MOUs). After the keynote speech and the bilateral meetings, Minister Cho will return to Korea on May 29.

Commissioner Youngmee Jee of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) will attend bilateral meetings with the WHO Deputy Director-General, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) of Germany, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), the Global Fund, leading disease control agencies including the Unitaid as well as the international organizations and NGOs. The KDCA will host side events on antibiotic resistance, sign MOUs with the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) and the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID) of Singapore, and engage in other activities to discuss plans and expand cooperation against global infectious diseases.

The Korean delegation will also attend sessions on ▲universal health coverage, ▲noncommunicable diseases, ▲antimicrobial resistance, ▲infection prevention and control, ▲pollution and health, ▲maternal, infant and young child nutrition, and the ▲Programme Budget 2024-2025 to present Korea’s stance and share views with other delegations.

Minister Cho said, “While leading discussions on global health agendas for Korea to fulfill its duties as a global hub, I will broadly share its outstanding healthcare achievements.”///
