Main Causes of Mortality and Incidence of Major Cancer Types

  • In 2016, the total number of deaths was 280,827. The leading cause of mortality was malignant neoplasm (cancer) with 153 deaths per 100 thousand people, followed by heart diseases (58.2), and cerebrovascular diseases (45.8, i.e. stroke).
  • The overall cancer incidence rate was 427.6 per 100 thousand people in 2014, which is up 11.7 from 415.9 in 2010.
