The Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW, Minister Cho KyooHong) and the Korea Health Promotion Institute (President Kim Hyun-joo) announced the hosting of the 37th World No Tobacco Day Commemoration and Policy Forum on Friday, May 31, at the FKI Tower in Yeouido, Seoul.

This year's theme of the World No Tobacco Day, "Protecting children from tobacco industry interference," aligns with the World Health Organization's (WHO) campaign. The event comprised a commemoration ceremony and policy forum, with attendance from over 250 individuals, including the MOHW 2nd Vice Minister Park Minsoo, advocates recognized for their anti-smoking efforts, child representatives from the National Center for the Rights of the Child, and university student anti-smoking supporters.

According to the WHO, the global tobacco industry spends an average of approximately KRW 31.4 billion per day on marketing, using social media platforms familiar to children and adolescents to advertise tobacco products.

During the commemoration ceremony, a themed video, that underscored how tobacco company marketing can instill misconceptions about tobacco in children and adolescents and lead them to use tobacco products, was screened to raise awareness, thereby calling for collective action on the issue.

Second Vice Minister Park Minsoo stressed, "In addition to strengthening policy efforts on anti-smoking policies, we must vigilantly respond to the tobacco industry's marketing strategies for the sake of future generations. We will persist in efforts to amend relevant laws to reinforce regulations on all tobacco products, including new types of cigarettes."///
