Minister Chin Soo-hee to attend the 64th World Health Assembly and visit Sweden, a model country for welfare systems □ Chin Soo-hee, Minister of Health and Welfare, is to leave for Switzerland on May 15 to attend the 64th World Health Assembly that will be held at the United Nations Office in Geneva from May 16 (Monday) through May 18 (Wednesday).

○ At the World Health Assembly, health ministers and senior health officials from 193 World Health Organization (WHO) Member States are expected to congregate and discuss efforts of individual countries and means of international cooperation regarding the "prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases."

○ In a keynote address at the UN Assembly Hall on May 17, Minister Chin is scheduled to introduce Korea's policy to reduce risk factors of chronic diseases such as smoking, excessive drinking, unhealthy dietary habits, and lack of exercise, and announce Korea's plans to actively participate in joint efforts of the international community.

○ While attending the Assembly, Minister Chin is expected to have bilateral meetings with Khaw Boon Wan, Health Minister of Singapore, Ponmek Dalaloy, Health Minister of Lao PDR, and Kohei Otsuka, Vice Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan, respectively, to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the area of healthcare.

□ Minister Chin will also visit Sweden, a model country of Northern European welfare, from May 19 (Thursday) to May 20 (Friday).

○ She will meet Göran Hägglund,, Minister for Health and Social Affairs of Sweden, to receive explanations on the basic orientation of the nation's healthcare and welfare policy and its reform measures to address its low birth rate and aging society, and to discuss plans for mutual cooperation between the two countries.

○ In addition, she will visit the Swedish Institute for Future Studies, a think tank for the nation's governmental policies; the Swedish Social Insurance Agency and the Swedish Pensions Agency, the executive bodies of social welfare systems; and the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions, an entity responsible for operating its healthcare system to take a close look at how the Swedish welfare systems work and examine their implications for our domestic policies.
