Laboratory Animal Research Center, the Cradle of Disease Control Research, Opens

□ After relocating to Ohsong, Chungbuk, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Director Jeon Byeong-yool) announced the opening (September 2, 2011) of the Laboratory Animal Research Center of about 12,454 square feet (350 pyeong) to expedite and improve infectious disease and vaccine research, high-risk pathogen research, and disease modelling research for dementia and so on.
○ The construction of the Laboratory Animal Research Center began in November 2007 and was completed in 2010. The Center has 17 animal labs and 12 special labs for research on infectious diseases, dementia, and metabolic diseases.
○ In July 2011, the Center was affirmed and verified by the latest animal testing facility standards to ensure the safety of researchers and minimize laboratory animals' impact on the external environment, and was registered as an animal testing facility as prescribed by the Laboratory Animal Act.
○ The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee was set up under the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in accordance with the Animal Protection Act to ensure ethical use of animals in all researches performed at the Centers. In addition, with a view toward encouraging researchers to apply ethics in the use of animals in their research, they are required to obtain prior approval of their animal testing plans and take training courses on the use and management of experimental animals.
○ The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expects that the opening of the Laboratory Animal Research Center will lead to outstanding outcomes of infectious disease research and disease modelling research at the national level based on the advanced animal research system, thereby contributing to disease prevention and promotion of public health.
