BIO KOREA 2011

□ The Ministry of Health and Welfare (Minister: Rim Chemin) announced that BIO KOREA 2011, the biggest international pharmaceutical and bio event in Korea, will be held from Sep. 28 to 30 in 2011 in COEX.

     ○ Bio Korea, which has been six years since its inception in 2006, is organized by Korea Health Industry Development Institute, Chungcheongbuk-do, and the Korea International Trade Association, and over 20,000 people from 450 domestic and foreign companies will participate in the event this year.

□ Bio Korea has served as a venue for exchange of technical information and commercialization through integrating and specializing bio events in Korea, contributing to advancing into global markets for domestic bio industry and raising the status of Korea’s bio industry.

     ○ This year, exhibitions for outstanding technology and products, conference, and business forum will take place as well as providing domestic companies with an opportunity to create business partnership with global bio and pharmaceutical companies, such as Merck & Co., Novartis, Eli Lilly & Co., to support globalization of domestic firms.

     ○ In connection with Columbus Project carried out by the ministry to help domestic healthcare companies make inroads into the North America’s market, promotional materials will be distributed and business meetings will be arranged during the event.

     ○ This event will lay the foundation for Korea to become top seven in the HT industry by 2020.

□ Under the theme of “Why Going for Emerging Market?” this year’s keynote speeches will be delivered by Gregory Wiederrecht Ph. D., Senior Vice President and Head of Merck Research Laboratories, Kazuji Tawara, M.D., Head of Sanofi R&D Japan, Paul Coleman, Ph.D., Chief Operating Officer of Hanwha Chemical Bio Business Unit, and Michael Kamarck, Ph.D., President of Merck BioVentures. 

      ○ The conference will consist of 15 tracks and 41 sessions, focusing on introduction of research trend and outlook on vaccine markets, therapeutic antibodies, technology transfer licensing, and regenerative medicine.

      ○ The business forum where 286 domestic and foreign companies will take part in will provide an opportunity for advancing into global markets and research cooperation through partnership between giant global pharmaceutical firms, such as Pfizer and Sanofi-Aventis, and major domestic and foreign biopharmaceutical companies.

□ An official in the ministry said, the ministry expects that BIO KOREA will play an important role in attracting interests in and presenting a new direction for bio and pharmaceutical industry, which is a future growth engine, and the ministry will seek to evolve BIO KOREA into a prestigious international event, which covers global trends of bio technology and business strategies.
