Hypertension and diabetes can be prevented by maintaining proper weight

- 2010 National Health and Nutrition Survey result announced -

Ministry of Health and Welfare (Minister Rim, Chae Min) reported that maintaining a proper weight in adulthood helps prevent hypertension, diabetes and dyslipimedia that precede cardiovascular diseases such as stroke and myocardial infarction, etc.

The analysis result of 2010 National Health and Nutrition Survey Data shows that obese people are twice as likely to have accompanying diseases-hypertension, diabetes and dyslipimedia than people with normal weights.

Obesity and the probability of getting related diseases: hypertension 2.5 times; diabetes 2.0 times; hypercholesterolemia 2.3 times; low HDL cholesterolemia 2.2 times; hypertriglyceridemia 2.4 times

The obesity rate among adults aged 19 and older is 30.8% (36.3% among men and 24.8% among women 24.8%). Among men, the figure is highest among those aged from 30 to 40 (42.3% in 30s and 41.2% in 40s) and among women, those aged from 60 to 70 show the highest rate (43.3% in 60s and 34.4% in 70s)

- It appears that the obesity rate is related to a lifestyle of intaking great volumes of energy but getting small amounts of physical exercise.

The volume of energy intakes is higher among men aged from 30 to 40 compared to the dietary reference intakes for Koreans (112.2%, 105.6%) and they show the lowest rate of getting mid and higher level physical exercises (23.6%, 23.0%)

Among women, those in their 60s and 70s show the lowest rate of getting mid and higher level physical activities (18.9%, 13.3%).

The long-term obesity rate pattern indicates that the obesity rate among men has been steadily climbing over the past three years (from 2008 to 2010), continued from the earlier ten consecutive years (from 1998 to 2007) and the figure among is showing a tendency of declining.

In addition, the rates of quitting smoking and drinking, getting physical activities and taking in balanced nutrition which are essential for enhancing health and preventing diseases failed to improve or even got worse over the past three years (from 2008 to 2010).

The smoking rate among men had been steadily going down over the earlier past ten years (from 66.3% in 1998 to 45.0% in 2007) but over the recent three years, the figure has remained almost about the same (from 47.7% in 2008 to 46.9% in 2009 and to 48.3% in 2010.)

The number of men who drink more than once a week has increased (from 74.6% in 2008 to 74.6% in 2009 and to 77.8% in 2010) and the figure remains still high among women (from 44.9% in 2008 to 43.3% in 2009 and to 43.3 % in 2010) as well.

The rate of getting mid- and higher-level (in terms of intensity) physical exercises shows the pattern of decreasing both among men (from 27.% in 2008 to 28.4% in 2009 and to 25.4% in 2010) and women (from 24.2% in 2008 to 24.1% in 2009 and 19.4% in 2010).

The amount of sodium intake among men is more than three times greater than the recommended reference amount (the rate has increased from 379.4% in 2008, to 383.4% in 2009 and to 398.4% in 2010) and the figure among women more than twice higher now, showing a tendency of steadily increasing over the past three years (from 275.6% in 2008 to 272.3% in 2009 and to 285.5% in 2010).
