Shin, Young Rok named Honorary Ambassador for the cardiopulmonary resuscitation campaign

- He will lead the promotion of CPR that brings about a miracle of giving life back to people!

Ministry of Health and Welfare (Minister Rim, Chae Min) announced that Shin, Young Rok (soccer player, Jeju United FC) has been appointed as honorary ambassador for the 2012 cardiopulmonary resuscitation campaign at 14:00 on 14 Dec. at President Hotel in Seoul

Shin, who has been receiving lots of love from the Korean public for his excellent performance as key striker on the national youth soccer team and the national soccer team for Beijing Olympics, had a heart attack during game on 8 May.

- He was raised thanks to the immediately-provided CPR and has become an icon of “miracle” among the public, presenting them with hope for resuscitation.

From now on, Shin will actively engage himself in a variety of activities to make CPR known to more people by appearing in the campaign advertisement and participating in major events regarding the campaign, etc.

It is important for CPR to be done within the “golden time,” and also in the case of Shin, CPR was conducted before the golden time passed, thus miraculously bringing him back to life.

In addition, Ministry of Health and Welfare held the 7th national emergency healthcare advancement campaign along with the appointment of honorary ambassador.

The emergency healthcare advancement campaign is to make widely known the importance of cardiopulmonary resuscitation under the slogan of “first love for life, making hearts flutter,” in the wake of the announcement of the beginning year of the cardiopulmonary resuscitation last year.

- At this event, students from Masan Samjin High School who won the grand prize at the national high school CPR contest demonstrated CPR practices.

Also, those who have made contributions to the development of emergency health care were awarded. Thirty three individuals and six organizations receive citations from Health and Welfare Minister.

- Particularly, An, Jae Hoon (soccer player, Daegu FC) who checked and cleared Shin’s airway and Kim, Jang Yeol (trainer, Jeju United FC) who performed CPR on Shin were included in the awardees, making the event even more special.

Currently, there is a high level of the awareness of CPR among the public (96.1%) due to the introduction of Good Samaritan Laws, etc but those who can actually perform CPR account only for 19.7%, indicating that there is need for effective training that can teach people how to conduct CPR.

Ministry of Health and Welfare informed that it has been steadily increasing the budget for emergency healthcare training to raise the percentage of CPRs being conducted (from 900 million won in 2008 to 5.1 billion won in 2011) and it is also expanding the first-aid treatment training for the public.
