Groundbreaking for the National Medical Science Knowledge Center held

- Active sharing of healthcare knowledge and information is expected -

Virtual case (1)

Just a few years ago, a researcher named A working for ** research institute had to get help from a friend of his who was working for a college to get access to academic papers he was interested in. The research institute that he was working for had only limited numbers of paper it could use due to its lack of a budget for subion to academic journals. However, recently, things changed. An increasing number of countries are joining PubMed Central (PMC)*, an international medical journal sharing database and it now has access to plenty of academic journals. Korea has established PMC Korea at the National Medical Science Knowledge Center and is part of PMC International. Thus, it can use good Korean academic journals for free of charge via PMC.

* PubMed Central (PMC, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc)

- It is run by the national medical library under the National Institutes of Health, NIH and provides the original texts of medical/bio science papers for free.

- According to the Public Access Policy concerning papers produced by researches funded by NIH, researchers are asked to submit their final peer-reviewed journal manus to PubMed Central.

- Currently, about 2.3 million academic journals are offered in their original texts.

** PubMed Central International (PMCI)

- An international network joined by PMC (US), UK PMC, http://www.ukpmc.ac.uk, (Jan. 2007), and PMC Canada, http://pubmedcentralcanada.ca,  (Oct. 2009)

- The original texts of papers registered are shared among them.

Virtual case (2)

A researcher named B working at ** college research institute is so excited about getting a ground-breaking research result. He has received great volumes of clinical research data and genome data that can help prove his research hypothesis. Clinical research conducted on human body is only possible at medical college sand hospitals and such research data cannot be accessed if there is no connection with the concerned researchers. It takes a long time to collect genome samples and analyze them and a lot it requires great amounts of research investment. Therefore, it has been difficult to obtain such data from the concerned researchers. However, now, the National Medical Science Knowledge Center has accumulated volumes of research data in which great amounts of national investments have been made and runs the process of offering them to related researchers. Anyone with an idea for research can use those data.

KCDC NIH (Director General Cho, Myung Chan) had a groundbreaking ceremony for the National

Medical Science Knowledge Center at the building site within Osong Life Science Complex (200

Osongsaengmyung 2-ro, Osong-eub, Cheongwon-gun) at 11 AM on 28 Feb. (Tue.).

Around 200 people attended the event including Vice Minister of Health and Welfare Sohn, Geon

Ik, Choongbuk Province Governor Lee, Si Jong, Cheongwongun Governor Lee, Jong Yoon and

national assembly members and policy makers, and experts from related areas such as medical

associations, etc.

The National Medical Science Knowledge Center of which the construction begins this time will

collect and preserve academic data in health care and medical science areas and provide the

latest medical information and research data.

Its main programs will include the provision of documental information such as thesis, reports,

etc regarding local medicine and the management and sharing of consolidated data base of

research resources such as genome information and clinical research data, etc for early

realization of customized medical era.

It aims to promote the development of health care technology and contribute to enhancement of

the national competitiveness through such programs.

The National Medical Science Knowledge Center will be built on the site as large as 9,918m2

and the building’s gross area is 6,669m2. The total 15.9 billion won is being invested and it has

four aboveground floors and one underground floor. The construction is expected to be

completed in Aug. 2013.

Its major facilities include the storage of Korean healthcare and medical science documents, a

general data room, a digital data development room and reading rooms, an international

conference room, etc.

The National Medical Science Knowledge Center is modeled after the US National Medical

Science Knowledge Center and is expected to facilitate the spread of Korean healthcare data

and to play a central role in data sharing at the international level.

In addition, it is anticipated to help Osong Life Science Complex become a global biomedical

hub by linking itself with six government-run organizations including KCDC and Osong High

Tech Medical Complex research support facilities as well as research activities of around 50

pharmaceutical and medical device companies.
