Seven-year-olds now eligible to receive child benefits, starting in April

The Ministry of Health and Welfare (Minister Kwon Deok-cheol) will pay child benefits from this April to the eligible children as the enforcement of the Child Benefits Act, which extends its beneficiary group from age under 7 to age under 8.
Newly subjected beneficiaries for this measure are 7-year-old children whose birthdays are from February 2014 to March 2015 (503,106 in total). Retrospective and payment periods vary depending on the date of birth. The payment period for children born after April 2015 will be automatically extended due to the revision of the law.
6-year-olds who had been receiving child benefit will be automatically extended their payment period, and 7-year-olds who have been suspended from child benefit due to the arrival of their 7th birthday will also receive child benefit retroactively. There will be no need for a separate claim.
Age 7 children whose child benefit payment already expired will get the retroactive benefit for a maximum period of three months. Parents who want to make a new claim for child benefit or who will make changes on their payment account need to visit the community center according to the child’s resident registration.
Child benefit is a system that pays 100,000 won per month to children (Korean nationals) to promote children’s rights and welfare and to reduce the parent’s economic burden of raising children. The government first introduced the system in September 2018 for 5-year-olds, and has steadily expanded its scope of payment.
As a result, 87.3% of the beneficiaries of the child benefit said they are satisfied, and that the system is helpful for parenting (2021, Realmeter). The system has the effect of reducing the economic burden of caring child, and contributing guaranteeing children’s right.
"As child benefits can help parents to care for the health of their children, we will do our best to pay them without a hitch." said Kim Ji-yeon, head of the child welfare policy division at the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
