Cases of Family, Immigration, and Regional Policy Are Discussed at the Population Forum to Address Population Issues

Facing Countries Worldwide

- Korea Population Forum 2023(Global Session) convened -

The Ministry of Health and Welfare (Minister Cho, KyooHong), Presidential Committee on Ageing Society and Population Policy (Vice Chair Young-mi Kim), and the Christian Broadcasting System (CBS, president Kim Jin-oh) jointly hosted the “2023 Korea Population Forum” on the theme of “A Leap toward a New Future” on November 20, Monday at 10 am at COEX in Samsung-dong, Seoul.

In Part 1, Karen Bogenschneider, a leading academic in the field of family studies and a professor of human development and family studies at the University of Wisconsin made the first keynote speech on “Viewing Korea’s Low Birth Rate through the Lens of Family.” Professor Bogenschneider presented various specific cases from different countries to show how childbirth has changed over time through policies on family, labor and education.

The second keynote speaker Jonathan Chaloff, a senior policy analyst at the OECD and a comparative migration policy expert on migration, employment and labor, analyzed immigration policies of OECD countries on the theme of “Planning Migration: policy intentions and real-world consequences in OECD countries”, and explained the effectiveness of the policies through specific cases.

In Part 2, Mi-jeong Jin, president of the Society for the Study of Family Policy, and Dr. Young-mi Shin, a researcher at the Population Policy Research Center of Seoul National University gave presentations on the theme of the “Changing Population Structure and Family”, which was followed by a panel discussion presided over by moderator Ji-yeon Lee, a researcher at the National Youth Policy Institute.

Part 3 includes presentations by Professor Kim, Keuntae of the Graduate School of Policy Studies at Korea University and Juyoung Jang, a researcher at the Migration Research and Training Center on the theme of “A Leap toward Becoming a Global Open Country” followed by a panel discussion presided over by professor Kim.

Part 4 features lectures on the theme of “How We Can Stop Local Towns from Becoming Extinct” The lectures include “Turning local towns facing the risk of extinction into hipsters’ sanctuaries” by President Youngtae Cho of the Population Policy Research Center at Seoul National University, “How did a daughter who never listens to her mother become the head of a farming village?” by Yoo-sol Kim, the leader of Wanmang Jinchang, a youth community in Wando-gun, and 'Finding Hope in a Vanishing Village' by Lee Seung Yoon, a comedian, as part of the “15 Minutes to Change the World” series.

Kim Hyeon-jun, Deputy Minister for Population Policy at the Ministry of Health and Welfare said, “The Population Forum is expected to provide policy implications for Korea on family, immigration and regional policy to the next level in the face of the accelerating trend of low birth rates and an aging society that are shaping a demographic transformation in Korea.”///
