International Symposium Held in Boston, U.S., the First Step Toward Global Expansion for Research-Driven Hospitals

- Seeking ways to increase the research capability of research-driven hospitals through Korea-U.S. joint research and to promote technology commercialization -

The Ministry of Health and Welfare (Minister Cho, KyooHong) announced that Korea Health Industry Development Institute (President Cha, SoonDo) and the Association of Korea Research-driven Hospitals* (Kim, Chong-jai, Chairman in the Associatioin of Research-driven Hospitals) host the “Research-Driven Hospitals International Symposium” at 2 p.m., Friday, April 28 (local time) in Boston, U.S.

* A research-driven hospital (April 2013~ present) is a hospital designated as such under Article 15 of the Health and Medical Service Technology Promotion Act, which is accredited for its outstanding research capability of creating industrial results based on the combined research infrastructure of industry, academia, research, and hospital.

The symposium will serve as a forum for 10 research-driven hospitals* designated in April 2013 to share their research capability and achievements and to find new research partners.

* Gachon University Gil Medical Center, Kyungpook National University Hospital, Korea University Guro Hospital, Korea University Anam Hospital, Samsung Medical Center, Seoul National University Hospital, Asan Medical Center, Ajou University Hospital, Severance Hospital, Cha University Bundang Medical Center

The symposium will be attended by 10 Korean research-driven hospitals, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and others.

The symposium consists of two sessions to be titled “Session 1. The Signing Ceremony of the MOU on Expanding Bilateral Cooperation for Global Clinical Research” and “Session 2. Special Lectures and Presentations of Korea-U.S. Joint Research Cases.”

Lim In-Taek, Deputy Minister for Healthcare Policy of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, applauded the research-driven hospitals for taking on the new challenge of holding the international symposium in Boston, the center of the U.S. bio industry, to build the foundation for global cooperation. He said, “The government will create an environment where qualified researchers at hospitals can focus on research while also providing patient care through treatments.”

Deputy Minister Lim added, “I hope this symposium will continue for years rather than a one-time event, and I ask for keener interest in research-driven hospitals in Korea and support for further cooperation as new research partners.” ///
