on the Operation of Global Training Hub for Biomanufacturing

- Republic of Korea and WHO sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU)
on the Global Training Hub for Biomanufacturing -

The Ministry of Health and Welfare (Minister Cho, KyooHong) and the World Health Organization (WHO, Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus) signed an MOU on the operation of Global Training Hub for Biomanufacturing (GTH-B) on May 25 (Thursday) 2023.

“GTH-B” is a training hub established to support capacity building of low-and middle-income countries in biomanufacturing to cope with infectious disease by providing training courses on vaccine and biological production. WHO designated Korea as the sole GTH-B in February 2022.

The MOU marks a major step forward as it establishes a framework for cooperation in operating the GTH-B. Under the MOU, Korea and WHO will work closely together under the steering committee in the areas of development of training programs, operations, infrastructures, fundraising, network buildings, and information-sharing. Particularly, the MOU has established a basis for working on procedure for co-branding of a training course.

Hwang Seunghyeon, Director General of Global Vaccine Hub Office of the Ministry of Health and Welfare conveyed his expectation saying, “I hope the MOU to facilitate cooperation between Korea and WHO on improving the vaccine and biological production capacity in low- and middle-income countries.”

“We are delighted to sign this Memorandum of Understanding to elevate our partnership to the next level and collaborate in the development of a comprehensive training curriculum. We hope this world-class training hub will help to build a skilled workforce and ensure quality health products can be manufactured around the world,” said Dr Yukiko Nakatani, WHO Assistant Director-General, Access to Medicines and Health Products. ///
