Exploring a New Strategy to Create Korean version of
Innovation Clusters by Benchmarking Major U.S. Bio Clusters

Minister of Health and Welfare Cho, KyooHong will visit Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco, three of the major bio clusters* located on the West Coast of the U.S. from July 4 (Tuesday) to July 9 (Sunday). The purpose of the visit is to explore strategies to create Korean version of bio innovation clusters and further crystallize bilateral cooperation with the U.S., a leading country in the bio-health industry, in the burgeoning fields of high-tech industries, and science and technology.

* According to the 2022 annual rankings of biopharma clusters in the U.S. issued by GEN, Cambridge(Boston) ranked 1st, San Francisco Bay Area ranked 2nd, San Diego ranked 5th followed by Los Angeles at 6th.

Previously, the government announced the “Strategies to Create New Bio-Health Markets” (February 28, 2023) and the “High-Tech Industries Global Cluster Development Plan” (June 1, 2023) as part of efforts to promote the bio-health industry, a key future industry into a secondary semiconductor industry that will spur the growth of the Korean economy. In particular, President Yoon Suk Yeol presented the goal of “actively seeking to create a Korean version of Boston cluster” at the meeting held to discuss “Strategies to Create New Bio-Health Markets” (February 28, 2023). During his state visit to the U.S. in April, President Yoon discussed ways to expand cooperation between Korean and U.S. clusters at the Korea-U.S. Cluster Round Table (April 28, 2023) held in Cambridge, Boston, home to the world’s top bio cluster.

Minister Cho will visit major corporations, universities, and hospitals (i.e. industry, academia, research, and hospital) that compose an innovative ecosystem of U.S. bio clusters. He said, “The April summit has meaningfully charted a new path to form a technology and industrial alliance between Korea and U.S., taking their bilateral relations beyond military alliance. As a follow-up to the summit outcomes, the government will explore ways to further cement bilateral cooperation and create a bio innovative cluster in Korea.” ///
