“Turn Crisis into Opportunity: A Future that We Are Prepared For” Ceremony for the 12th Population Day

- Dr. Ryoo Choon Soo was recognized with the Order of Civil Merit,

Dongbaek Medal for running a 24-hour emergency delivery system

in a medically underserved area for 20 years -

The Ministry of Health and Welfare (Minister Cho, KyooHong) celebrated the “12th World Population Day” at a ceremony held at 2 p.m. on July 11 (Tuesday) at the Grand Auditorium of Sejong Government Complex. The commemorative event was held under the theme of “Turn Crisis into Opportunity: A Future that We Are Prepared For” to bring together all members of the society including both the private and public sectors to deal with the aggravating population crisis, as the latest total fertility rate falls to 0.78 putting Korea at the brink of entering a super-aged society by 2025.

At the ceremony, the MOHW recognized the individuals and organizations for their contribution to actively responding to declining population problems including low fertility rate and aging society, with the Order of Civil Merit (1 Dongbaek Medal), Service Merit Medal (1), Presidential Citation(6), Prime Minister’s Citation(7), Minister of Health and Welfare Citation(50). Doctor Ryu Chun-soo of Moa Maternity Clinic in Nonsan-Si received the Order of Civil Merit, Dongbaek Medal in recognition of his contribution to making safe and health delivery possible for women in the southwest of Chungcheongnam-do by offering 24-hour emergency delivery services in the medically underserved area for the past 20 years. Professor Choi, Seulki of the KDI School of Public Policy and Management was awarded the Service Merit Medal for his role in raising public awareness of the effectiveness of paternity leave by conducting policy research and contributing articles on the need for expanding paternity leave.

Minister Cho, KyooHong said, “It is possible to overcome this population crisis and better prepare for the future when the government makes adequate policies that support families with children, when the parents can take care of their kids together at home, and when the corporations and local communities make greater efforts to create a better child-rearing environment.” He added, “We ask for your interest in, and support for, government policies to deal with low fertility rates and an aging society.” ///
