The visit was arranged as part of the K-Health Project launched by MOHW and Korea Human Resources Development Institute for Health and Welfare (KOHI) to support overseas expansion of Korea’s healthcare services, which has gained traction in 10 ASEAN countries since 2021. This year, MOHW offers the first in-person training session from July 10 to 18 since the COVID-19 outbreak. Previously, it was offered through non-contact channels due to the pandemic.

The delegation consists of key middle managers from the health ministries of the six ASEAN countries including the Head of ASEAN Secretariat’s Health Division Ferdinal M. Fernando, Acting Vice-President Lemuel T. Untalan of Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, Director Wilailuk Wisasa of the Policy Advocacy Unit(PAU), Thailand’s National Health Security Office.

During the visit, the delegation will also visit the affiliated agencies of MOHW including the National Health Insurance Service, Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, the KOHI and Korea Social Security Information Service as well as major healthcare-related facilities including Wonju Medical Instrument Techno-Valley Foundation, Osong Medical Cluster and a public health center in Sejong City to gain a better understanding of Korea’s healthcare policy and system.

Deputy Minister of Planning and Coordination at MOHW Kim Heon Joo said, “Given that ASEAN is a core partner for Korea’s Indo-Pacific strategy, I hope this training session will help Korea and ASEAN enhance mutual understanding of their respective healthcare systems, which in turn will lead to substantial cooperation down the road.”

Ferdinal M. Fernando of the ASEAN Secretariat said, “I appreciate the warm reception from the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Korea, and have high expectations for this training session to serve as a catalyst for expanding cooperation in healthcare between ASEAN and Korea.” ///
