<Summary>

The Ministry of Health and Welfare (Minister Cho, KyooHong) announced the “3rd Comprehensive Support Plan for Senior Employment and Social Activity” (2023~2027) on July 27 through the Presidential Committee on Aging Society and the Population Policy Secretariat. Centered on ‘implementing welfare for the weak’ and ‘job creation’, the plan is geared toward the senior employment policy to meet the various needs associated with a super-aged society and the new elderly generation.

In response to the increasing number of senior citizens expected to be ten-million, along with the upcoming super-aged society, the government will consistently provide opportunities of public-service activity to meet the employment needs of senior citizens and increase those in social service sector as well as private sector to more than 40% of the whole senior employment program, toward the goal of creating jobs for senior citizens equivalent to 10% of senior citizen population by 2027.

Under the plan, the government will continue providing opportunities of public-service activitiy to serve for the weak including children and senior citizens, while securing post-retirement income for low-income senior citizens. In particular, the government will expand the “RohRoh(老 老) Care” program, which is designed to minimize blind spots in caring of senior citizens, including those living alone and with physical ailments, and other support programs to provide them with meals, clean their homes, and help with daily chores that are in high demand in local communities.

The government will work with public organizations and social welfare facilities to create jobs in various social service areas, including care (after-school care program for elementary school students) and safety (safety inspection on old facilities at senior centers). It will also diversify tailored jobs for the new elderly generation by increasing support including initial funding and expert counseling for them to find jobs in the private sector or start their own business.

1st Vice Minister of Health and Welfare Lee Ki-il said, “Senior employment support policy is important not only for low-income super-aging senior citizens but also relatively less old-aged people who are still productive but not ready to retire yet. The government will work even harder to ensure that the jobs for senior employment not only guarantee income in old age but also help the weak and enhance national competitiveness.” ///
