Participation of MOHW and KDCA in

the 74th WHO Western Pacific Reginal Committee Meeting

 

- Key regional issues including universal health coverage, health security, and program budgets were discussed -

 

The Ministry of Health and Welfare (Minister Cho, Kyoohong) and Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA, Commissioner Jee Youngmee) announced that Korean delegation made up of officials from the Ministry and KCDA participated in the 74th session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Western Pacific (hereinafter “regional committee”) held in Manila, Philippines from October 16 to 20.

 

With the regional committee being comprised of high-ranking officials of health and welfare from 37 member states and areas in the West Pacific region, the meeting discussed plans, implementation, and outcomes of major regional health programs for the Western Pacific, and promoted cooperation among the member states.

 

The Korean delegation led by Lee Hoyul, Director General for International Cooperation of the MOHW, consisted of officials from MOHW and KDCA and advisors to participate in the agenda discussion. During the meeting, the Korean delegation held bilateral meetings with the heads of delegations including Japan and Australia.

 

On October 16, the first day of the meeting, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus delivered keynote address and the Acting Director Zsusanna Jakab of the World Health Organization Regional Office for the Western Pacific (WPRO) presented the Report of Regional Director.

The head of Korean delegation Lee Hoyul spoke on the need for member states to enhance capacity to respond to health issues and build a more flexible healthcare system.

 

In addition, the meeting included interim reporting of the Programme Budget 2022-2023 performance, approval of the Programme Budget 2024-2025, and election of the new Regional Director of the WPRO.

 

The panel discussion on Investing in Health and Universal Health Coverage focused on ways to expand the health budget. In the theme-based discussions that follows, the Korean delegation discussed and approved the draft regional framework developed by the WPRO on Asia-Pacific health security, health innovation strategies, communication for health, and health workforce. Conveying Korea’s commitment to continued contribution to the Western Pacific region, major cases of international cooperation undertaken by the Korean government were introduced. In the meantime, key developments in the latest WPRO technical programmes including Health Security, including COVID-19 and Antimicrobial Resistance, Noncommunicable Diseases and ageing, Climate Change, the Environment and Health, Reaching the Unreached) were shared by the Secretariat.

 

Lee Hoyul, Director General for International Cooperation, said, “It is highly significant and timely for us to participate in the post-pandemic discussions on the achievements and challenges of the Western Pacific region. Given this, Korea will get actively involved in maintaining close cooperation among the member states in the region.”///
