Minister Kwon visited NHIC Ilsan Hospital (lead by Director Kim Seong-wu, located at 100 Ilsan-ro, Ilsandong-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi) on January 3 to encourage medical staff at the hospital, serving as a regional hub institution*.

* Responsible for intensive treatment of (semi-)critical cases of COVID-19, regional hub hospitals provide beds for patients with (semi-) critical and moderate symptoms to ensure flexible and efficient treamtent of different conditions.

NHIC Ilsan Hospital became the nation’s first public hospital designated as a regional hub hospital on December 17, 2020, and turned 278 beds into 107 beds* for COVID-19 patients.

* 12 beds for critical cases (including the existing 3 beds), 10 beds for semi-critical cases, and 85 beds for moderate cases

The hospital is planning to build a collaborative network* with other medical institutions within the region to respond to the pandemic and efficiently manage beds with a focus on the role of regional hub hospital.

* AI algorithms will be used to forecast and classify patients who are highly likely to develop critical conditions, to implement collaborative treatment system among different hospitals, and to comprehensively manage changing conditions of COVID-19 patients.

“The collaborative system within the region will be able to effectively respond to the shortage of beds for COVID-19 patients,” noted Director Kim Seong-wu of NHIC Ilsan Hospital.

Director Chu Won-oh of Paju Hospital and Director Lee Wang-jun of Myongji Hospital also agreed to prepare a collaborative system to secure beds and participate in the effort.
