OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME :

To develop and promote interventions for the prevention and management of dissease and the promotion of healthy growth and development for the 0-19 year age based on evidence.

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL :

Policy - Recommend department and policy pbjectives;

Resources - Manage delegated budget and other resources; mobilize resources;

Management - plan, direct, evaluate and provide guidance to the work of the department; establish and adjust priorities; recommend, negotiate and evaluate projects, select project staff and consultants, evaluate staff performance;

Collaboration - Work with regional counterparts; provide advice on the programme; advise on policy issues, governments, NGOs, academic and research institutions and other international organizations; develop advisory approaches and information to assist in formulating effective policies and programmes at the national level; coordinate and maintain liaison within WHO and with other organizations, as assigned represent the Organization in area of responsibility.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED :

EDUCATION AND SKILLS :

Medical degree; appropriate specialization(e.g.paediatrics, public health or health management) with emphasis on child and adolescent health from an international perspective. Knowledge of epidemiology of child and adolescent morbidity and mortality, demonstrated by scientific publications; strategies for supporting growth and development; planning health services for children and adolescents. Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate and supervise staff of various backgrounds and develop a team approach to issues. 

Excellent negotiating skills. Ability to interact with national and international authorities.

EXPERIENCE :

Ten years\'' experience in international public health, preferably in a managerial and policy development position, with working experience in a multilateral context.

LANGUAGES :

Excellent knowledge of English or French, and a good working knowledge of the other.

ANNUAL SALARY(net of fax) :

US$76,325 at single rate and US$83,081 with 

primary dependants. POST ADJUSTMENT : 26.1% of the above figures. The percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards.
