Title : Director Grade : D.1 Official station (country) : Geneva (Switzerland) Organizational Location/Unit : Health Technology and Pharmaceuticals (HTP) Initiative for Vaccine Research (IVR) Objectives of the programme : The shared CDS (Communicable Diseases)/HTP/UNAIDS mission with respect to vaccines and immunization is to promote and support the development of vaccines to prevent and control priority communicable diseases; to pull together all WHO/UNAIDS vaccine research activities, including the Joint WHO/UNAIDS HIV vaccine research programme into a single organization wide activity; to promote and support: exploratory vaccine research including novel means of delivery; vaccine discovery and development to regulatory approval and where necessary arrangement for manufacture and commercialisation; implementation of effectiveness trials and development of appropriate vaccination strategies for optimal public health use; transfer of vaccine research technology and capacity building in developing countries; improved public/private sector interactions and the formation of partnerships when appropriate; provide global coordination in vaccine R&D especially with regard to overall strategies and evaluation, capacity building and country relations. The successful candidate will : manage and coordinate all WHO/UNAIDS vaccine research activities; in particular: coordinate the development and review of overall vaccine research policies, strategies and general modus operandi, including overseeing the development and implementation of a single organization-wide strategic plan; provide leadership for the vaccine R&D activities; provide an organization-wide font of knowledge, experience and expertise of immunology and its application to vaccinology; coordinate the operation and rationalization, where appropriate, of existing and new vaccine research committees in CDS, HTP and UNAIDS to ensure the effective management, monitoring and review of vaccine research activities; establish and manage IVR\''s technology transfer programme; play the key role in fund-raising for vaccine research; ensure that WHO/UNAIDS continue to be the key oversight agencies and the neutral brokers for global vaccine R&D; liaise with the Department of HIV/AIDS/STI in FCH for overall coordination of HIV activities in WHO. Qualifications Required : Education and Skills : Doctoral degree in medical or biological sciences from a recognized university; good academic background including record of achievement in fund-raising for, and publishing results of, appropriate research would be an asset; thorough knowledge of vaccine research, including discovery, development, testing, registration and production; high reputation in vaccine R&D circles at international level and thus ability to elicit respect and constructive cooperation of scientists in developing countries, senior staff in academia, industry, health ministries and donor agencies, and of colleagues and subordinates; good understanding of public health needs and vaccine preventable diseases control programmes; broad knowledge of orphan infectious diseases, Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Good Clinical Practices (GCP), regulatory requirements, international product registration, patent and licensing procedures would be an asset. Experience : Extensive experience (10 years post-doctoral) at senior scientific/managerial level, either in an international, research based pharmaceutical company, dealing with vaccines, or in a department of vaccine R&D at a public sector agency or institute; record of achievement in discovery, development or registration of successful vaccine(s) or active participation in such processes as coordinator and facilitator; experience in legal and commercial aspects of product research and development would be an asset. Languages : Excellent knowledge of English or French with working knowledge of the other language (needed to promote the programme, elicit funds for it and produce oral and written presentations on its activities). Annual salary (net of tax) : US$ 72 407 at single rate and US$ 78 334 with primary dependants. Post Adjustment: 19.6% of the above figures. This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
