Title : Scientist (Epidemiological Surveillance Officer) Post of limited duration for two years from date of recruitment Grade : P.4 Official station (country) : Cairo (Egypt) Organizational Location/Unit : Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean (EMRO) Division of Integrated Control of Diseases (DCD) Vaccine Preventable Diseases and Immunization (VPI) Objectives of the programme : To promote maximum performance of the Expanded Programme of Immunization (EPI) target diseases surveillance system with emphasis on poliomyelitis, measles and neonatal tetanus. This includes preparation of regional policies and strategies, as well as guidelines and provision of technical support to Member States. The successful candidate will : assist in the development of appropriate regional strategies and standards related to surveillance of EPI target diseases with emphasis on polio, measles and neonatal tetanus. Ensure an effective regional monitoring system for EPI target diseases. Assist in the development of dissemination of appropriate surveillance methods and material. Provide technical assistance to countries to strengthen surveillance and data management. Ensure maximum coordination of surveillance activities. Qualifications Required : Education and Skills : Degree in medical or health-related field with postgraduate training in public health, disease surveillance and epidemiology. Technical expertise in public health, epidemiology, disease control, and disease surveillance. Ability to exercise leadership and to work effectively with colleagues at national and international level. Ability to analyse data and write concise reports for both scientific journals, as well as materials suitable for EPI Programme Managers in developing nations. Experience : Considerable experience in disease surveillance or field epidemiology (at least 5 years) at national level and some similar experience at international level preferably in developing countries. Experience in the management of computerized data. Experience with immunization programmes desirable. Languages : Very good knowledge of English. Knowledge of Arabic or French would be an asset. Annual salary (net of tax) : US$ 55 180 at single rate and US$ 59 255 with primary dependants. Post Adjustment: 16.2% of the above figures. This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
