Title : Scientist Grade : P.5 Official station (country) : Geneva (Switzerland) Organizational Location/Unit : Health Technology and Pharmaceuticals (HTP) Vaccines and Biologicals (V&B) Access to Technologies (ATT) Objectives of the programme : The objective of the WHO Vaccines and Biologicals Department (V&B) is to achieve a world in which all people at risk are protected against vaccine-preventable diseases, through work in three major areas: Innovation, Immunization Systems and Accelerated Disease Control. The objective of the Access to Technologies (ATT) team is to reduce financial and technical barriers to the introduction of new and existing vaccines and immunization-related technologies, through coordinating global demand and capacity, ensuring availability of appropriate supply sources, developing and promoting potential financing mechanisms, providing support for technology transfer and ensuring capacity to oversee and regulate these products by strengthening national regulatory authorities and national supervision. The successful candidate will : Serve as V&B focal point in developing strategies and policies to assure safe and effective supplies of polio vaccines sufficient for the Polio Eradication Initiative and implement policies related to polio vaccine quality, regulation, production and containment. In this highly visible post, the incumbent will: 1. Serve as WHO focal point on all issues of quality of OPV. 2. React to and resolve issues of quality of locally produced OPV. 3. Develop acceptable new supply sources to ensure the success of the Polio Eradication Initiative. 4. Provide support in efforts to ensure containment of polio strains in vaccine manufacturing facility in preparation for cessation of immunization. 5. Serve as a resource on issues related to possible development and production of new polio vaccines to complete eradication. 6. Serve as V&B resource on issues of Good Manufacturing Practice. Qualifications Required : Education and Skills : Graduate degree in natural or physical science (such as biology, chemistry, pharmacy, vaccinology); post-graduate degree in natural or physical science or equivalent level of experience. Excellent understanding of the concepts of vaccine production and regulation and of WHO\''s policies and strategies in this area. Intimate knowledge and experience in Good Manufacturing Practice. Excellent communication skills, including presentation skills. Proven ability to plan and implement new strategies and activities to achieve a goal. Ability to function effectively in a team setting. Understanding of policies and strategies of Polio Eradication Initiative and of UN agency procurement would be an asset. Experience : At least ten years\'' experience working with vaccine production and regulation at the national and international level. UN experience, preferably WHO, at any level would be an asset. Languages : Excellent knowledge of English or French and very good knowledge of the other. Ability to work in other WHO languages would be an asset. Annual salary (net of tax) : US$ 65 176 at single rate and US$ 70 157 with primary dependants. Post Adjustment: 19.6% of the above figures. This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
