Title : Scientist (Time-limited post - two years) Grade : P.5 Official station (country) : Geneva (Switzerland) Organizational Location/Unit : Family and Community Health (FCH) Department of Reproductive Health and Research (RHR) Objectives of the programme : The main objectives of the Department of Reproductive Health and Research are to: (i) promote, facilitate and conduct research to improve reproductive health; (ii) support countries with knowledge and tools to formulate policies and strategies to implement appropriate interventions to improve reproductive health; and (iii) support countries to strengthen the capacity of communities to make informed reproductive health choices and participate in making improvements in reproductive health. The work of the Team on Technical Cooperation with Countries is concerned with the achievement of all three objectives and includes assisting developing countries to strengthen their capacities to carry out the required research and programmatic activities in the area of reproductive health. The successful candidate will : assist the developing countries in the Asia/Pacific Region to strengthen their research and programmatic capacities to respond to their reproductive health needs. This entails monitoring the implementation of institutional research and training grants awarded to centres and to individuals in the countries in the Asia/Pacific Region. The incumbent will also serve as the focal point for reproductive health activities being implemented in the Region by the Department. S(he) needs to work with policy makers, reproductive health programme managers and scientists, assisting them in their research, training, national planning and organizational efforts in the field of reproductive health. S(he) will be expected to assist in the identification of region-specific reproductive health needs and, in consultation with relevant staff in the Department, provide advice on research, tools, norms, standards and programmatic approaches essential for improving reproductive health. The incumbent will also coordinate Regional Advisory Panel meetings. Qualifications Required : Education and Skills : University degree in biomedical or related discipline relevant to reproductive health research and/or programmes. Postgraduate qualification or PhD in biomedical sciences or public health. Training in research methodologies relevant to reproductive health, and management degree or training would be assets. Wide knowledge in the field of reproductive health and of the research methods, interventions and programmatic approaches used in this field. Ability, sensitivity and tact to collaborate effectively with developing country policy-makers, programme managers, scientists and service providers and to provide them appropriate support in their efforts. Should also have the relevant personal qualities required for team work. Familiarity with reproductive health issues and needs in countries in the Asia/Pacific Region would be assets. Experience : Considerable (at least 10 years) experience in research and/or management at the national level and international experience in reproductive health related activities in developing countries, including research capacity strengthening activities. Languages : Excellent knowledge of English or French with working knowledge of the other. Knowledge of other UN languages would be desirable. Annual salary (net of tax) : US$ 65 176 at single rate and US$ 70 157 with primary dependants. Post Adjustment: 16.% of the above figures. This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
