Title : Team Leader (Spanish) Grade : P.5 Official station (country) : Geneva (Switzerland) Organizational Location/Unit : External Relations and Governing Bodies (EGB) Governing Bodies (GBS) Translation Services (TRA) Objectives of the programme : Within the External Relations and Governing Bodies Cluster, Governing Bodies Department, the Translation Services team provides high-quality, timely and cost-effective translation services to WHO\''s governing bodies and technical programmes in the six official languages, so as to make health policy and technical documentation from WHO as accessible as possible. The successful candidate will : Manage and supervise the Spanish translation team, to clear for print or issue, all translations produced within or through the team; to translate, revise or edit texts as appropriate; to promote and coordinate the work on terminology; to ensure the best use of available resources. The main objectives of the work are : 1. To assume the managerial and supervisory responsibilities for the Spanish translation team, the incumbent is called upon to: a) receive, screen and act upon all requests for translation or assistance for meetings within or beyond headquarters; b) consult with originator departments and negotiate any practical aspects related to the provision of translation, such as timing, resources, etc; c) plan, coordinate, supervise and follow up translation, revision, editorial, terminology and reference work; d) allocate work to permanent and temporary translators and decide on priorities, target dates and extent of revision required; e) assign staff to particular duties and evaluate the quality and quantity of their performance; f) brief, guide, counsel and motivate regular and temporary staff; g) advise and assist the TRA Coordinator in matters of recruitment, training and staff development; h) interview, test and appraise candidates and maintain an active roster of competent temporary translators; i) recommend action on personnel, budgetary, procedural and other matters relating to the efficient operation of the subunit. 2. To provide translation services to WHO governing bodies and technical units the incumbent will: a) clear for print or issue, all translations; b) translate into the target language, revise or edit a variety of material, including complex, urgent, sensitive or confidential texts. c) ensure the building up of TRA terminology data base; d) oversee the holdings in TRA reference room and electronic data bases, recommending additions and updates; e) give expert advice on usage on request. 3. To perform other related duties and act for TRA Coordinator as required. Qualifications Required : Education and Skills : University degree in translation, languages, science, literature or in a subject field of interest to WHO. Training in terminology or in applications of computer science to translation, or in a health related field an advantage. Mastery of the art of translation. Team leadership, tact and discretion. Knowledge of editorial and terminology work. Ability to use computer equipment. Administrative and managerial abilities and familiarity with health and health related subjects desirable. Experience : Extensive experience in translation, revision and editing of the target language or languages. Experience at the international level, preferably within the UN system and some experience in supervisory functions an advantage. Languages : Full command of relevant official language and excellent knowledge of English. Knowledge of other languages used in WHO would be an advantage. Annual salary (net of tax) : US$ 65 176 at single rate and US$ 70 157 with primary dependants. Post Adjustment: 16.% of the above figures. This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
