Title : Scientist (Virologist) (Post of limited duration for two years with possibility of extension subject to availability of funds) Grade : P.4 Official station (country) : Cairo (Egypt) Organizational Location/Unit : Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean (EMRO) Poliomyelitis Eradication Programme Objectives of the programme : To develop the regional poliomyelitis laboratory network which provides essential support to the poliomyelitis eradication initiative in surveillance and in monitoring programme performance. The successful candidate will : Provide technical and operational support in the planning, organization and development of the regional poliomyelitis laboratory network; collaborate in quality assurance, training of laboratory personnel, and maintenance of equipment and of the reporting and information system. Qualifications Required : Education and Skills : Postgraduate degree in a biological or laboratory science from a recognized university and postgraduate training and experience in virology. Knowledge of laboratory work, skills in organization and management of laboratory services and laboratory diagnosis of communicable diseases. Ability to work harmoniously as a member of a team, adapt to diverse educational and cultural backgrounds and maintain a high standard of personal conduct. Ability to determine optimal laboratory support for poliomyelitis eradication an asset. Experience : Considerable experience in practical and operational application of management of laboratory services and laboratory diagnosis of viral diseases. Languages : Excellent knowledge of spoken and written English. Knowledge of Arabic or French an advantage. Annual salary (net of tax) : US$ 55 180 at single rate and US$ 59 255 with primary dependants. Post Adjustment: 16.2% of the above figures. This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
