Title : Scientist Grade : P.5 Official station (country) : Geneva (Switzerland) Organizational Location/Unit : Health Technology and Pharmaceuticals (HTP) Vaccines and Biologicals (V&B) Vaccine Development (VAD) Objectives of the programme : The mission of V&B is to work towards a world in which all children are vaccinated against vaccine preventable diseases, and in which the range of important health problems that are vaccine preventable is as broad as possible. To this end, the objective of VAD is to provide leadership and vision to the field, to facilitate and, where necessary, support the research activities needed to develop new vaccines against diseases of public health importance and to facilitate the introduction and use of new and existing vaccines. The successful candidate will: Provide leadership in research and development related to the vaccine-mediated reduction of diarrhoeal morbidity/mortality in developing countries, in particular: To develop and sustain a broad vision of research required to provide effective diarrhoeal disease vaccines. To develop, together with partners, a global research and development strategy based on this vision. To plan and coordinate, together with partners, pre-clinical and clinical studies of diarrhoeal disease vaccines and to evaluate the burden of diarrhoeal diseases in developing countries. To participate in advocacy for this area and maintain close contact with the vaccine industry. To act as WHO secretariat for the Diseases of the Most Impoverished (DOMI) Programme of the International Vaccine Institute (IVI), Seoul, Republic of Korea. Qualifications Required : Education and Skills : Medical degree or a degree(s) in biomedical sciences at Ph.D. or comparable level. Post-graduate qualifications in a relevant field such as microbiology, immunology and/or epidemiology. Profound knowledge of all aspects of organization, management and administration of vaccine research and development; excellent interpersonal, negotiating and consultative skills. Established record of successful research supported by relevant publications. This research should include work in the field of diarrhoeal diseases and vaccine evaluation. Sound reputation in the field. Particular expertise in the administration of research programmes would be an advantage. Experience : Over ten years\'' postgraduate experience in research related to vaccines against diarrhoeal diseases. Experience with field evaluation of vaccines. Experience in coordinating or managing diverse groups. Direct involvement in relevant laboratory based research and development and in clinical testing either in a developing country or in an industrial setting would be an advantage. Languages : Excellent knowledge of English or French with a good working knowledge of the other language. Annual salary (net of tax) : US$ 65 176 at single rate and US$ 70 157 with primary dependants. Post Adjustment: 24.% of the above figures. This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
