Title : Scientist Grade : P.5 Official station (country) : Geneva (Switzerland) Organizational Location/Unit : Health Technology and Pharmaceuticals (HTP) Vaccines and Biologicals (V&B) Vaccine Assessment & Monitoring (VAM) Objectives of the programme : The mission of the WHO Vaccines and Biologicals Department (V&B) is to achieve a world in which all people at risk are protected against vaccine-preventable diseases, through work in three major areas: promoting innovations; strengthening routine immunization systems; and accelerating disease control. Under accelerated disease control; poliomyelitis eradication is one of V&B\''s three priority projects. A critical aspect of this initiative is an effective global polio laboratory network. The successful candidate will : Under the supervision of Coordinator, VAM, and in close collaboration with the Country Support Team for the Poliomyelitis Eradication Initiative (PEI) at HQ, Regional Offices, and national health authorities: Manage the global level of the polio laboratory network by directing and coordinating its key activities, monitoring performance, and taking action to address areas of need. Develop plans for further development of the network in accordance with the evolving needs of the PEI and ensure effective implementation of those plans and availability of adequate resources. Ensure strategic planning, implementation, and resource availability for effective laboratory containment of polioviruses. Ensure that the information from the global laboratory network is closely linked with surveillance at all levels and is available in a useful, efficient and timely manner to meet the needs of the PEI. Promote good communications and working relationships with all stakeholders in the PEI and participate in the alignment of the PEI with other related public health initiatives. Perform other duties as assigned by the first and second-level supervisors. Qualifications Required : Education and Skills : Degree in Medicine, Science or Social Sciences with postgraduate degree in virology, microbiology, public health or epidemiology. Specialization in enterovirology would be an asset. Extensive knowledge and experience in virology, especially in the isolation of poliovirus. Demonstrated management ability. Good interpersonal/communication skills in a multi-cultural environment. Ability to work technically with partners. Advanced skills in data management. Good writing skills and proven ability to publish in scientific journals. Experience in molecular techniques for viral diagnosis, characterization, and research would be an asset. Experience : Over ten years\'' experience at the national or regional level in a diagnostic laboratory conducting viral isolation and characterization. Over two years experience at the international level in the planning, development, financial management, and daily operations of a laboratory network. It would be an asset to have had previous experience with surveillance systems and/or immunization systems; proven ability as an international advisor or consultant. Languages : Excellent knowledge of English or French with a good working knowledge of the other language. Knowledge of Spanish, Russian or other offical languages of the UN would be an asset. Annual salary (net of tax) : US$ 65 176 at single rate and US$ 70 157 with primary dependants. Post Adjustment: 24.% of the above figures. This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
